Srinagar, Feb 25: Upholding the centuries-old tradition of brotherhood that lives around in Kashmir valley, the Muslims of Damhal Hanjipora area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district today helped in the cremation process of a Sikh man in the area.
Eye-witnesses said that one Surinder Singh aged 75 died in Pombai village of Damhal Hanjipora on Wednesday after a brief illness; however, his last rites were performed as per rituals today with the help of the Muslims living in the area.
They said that as soon as the news of Surinder Singh’s death reached, the local Muslims made special arrangements to carry out his last rites as per the Sikh rituals.
“The Muslims got the firewood needed for the cremation and helped the family in every possible way,” the locals said.
One local man who identified himself as Abdul Rehman said: “It is in our religion that you should help and take care of your neighbours irrespective of their religion and we did that keeping our teachings in mind.”
The gesture of the local Muslims has left a great impact on the family members of the deceased man. The family has been doing its business in Kashmir for the last several years and said that people in the country should learn humanity from the people of Kashmir.
Dahan Singh, son-in-law of the deceased man said: “We have been working in Kashmir for the past decade. I am overwhelmed by the approach of locals. They are great human beings. People across India should learn the principles of humanity from the people of Kashmir.”
