Srinagar, Jan 30: Local residents in Tankipora area today helped perform the last rites of a Kashmiri Pandit who died yesterday after a prolonged illness.
As soon as the news of Sohan Lal’s death spread, well before his relatives could arrive, the local Muslims assembled at his residence and started the preparations for his last rites.
Ashok Koul, one of the deceased’s relatives who flew from Delhi, said that his uncle never left Kashmir and would always say that he had his people to take care of him.
“I am thankful to these people; they have stayed here since yesterday and have ensured all the arrangements needed. More than relatives, I have seen the locals here being forthcoming,” he said.
He mentioned that he left Kashmir more than 34 years ago, and upon reaching, everything was already taken care of by the locals, highlighting the spirit of brotherhood that needs to flourish.
Another relative of the deceased, Sohan Lal, from Jammu, also expressed gratitude for the support provided by the local Muslims in the area throughout his stay in Tanki Pora.
“We just came here, and everything that needed to be done was taken care of by the local Muslims living in the area. This is pure love and brotherhood; they even brought him from the hospital,” he said.
A local resident, Muhammad Ishaq Shah, described the deceased as a man with a golden heart who chose to stay in Kashmir despite all the odds.
“We did what we were supposed to do as humans; we also made arrangements for the stay of his relatives who arrived here to pay condolences,” he added, while urging Kashmiri Pandits to return and live the way they used to.
