JAMMU, Nov 9: Chairperson of Waqf Development Committee (WDC) of Ministry of Minority Affairs Dr Darakhshan Andrabi today said that Mutawallis are responsible custodians and caretakers of Waqf properties.
“The role of Mutawallis has been broadly described in the Central Waqf Act but it needs some amendments to make the system accountable in the given changed scenario. In whole of India, major Muslim shrines and properties are managed by Mutawallis and in-order to make the management better, the whole system needs a revamp. We cannot afford to continue the short-comings in the system and the change is inevitable,” said Dr Darakhshan Andrabi while addressing a one-day Mutawalli Conference at Bangalore.
Dr Andrabi called upon the Mutawallis throughout the country to understand their responsibilities and rededicate themselves with the spirit of service to their assignments as they are looking after the places which are spiritual powerhouses and places of public reverence. She also gave details about added facilities to the Haj pilgrims this year. She appealed to all Waqf bodies in the country to extend their support in making Waqf secure, transparent and developing as a huge profit making asset-system so that with the extra-managed revenues other necessary infrastructure is created as required.
The Conference was organized by Central Waqf Council in collaboration with the Minority Affairs Department of Government of Karnataka. Representatives of Central Waqf Council, CEO of Karnataka State Waqf Board and Secretary Minority Affairs Ministry were present on the occasion. Dr Darakhshan Andrabi was earlier received by Dr Syed Naseer Hussain, Member of Rajyasabha on behalf of the State Waqf at Bangalore.
An interactive session was conducted in which Mutawallis briefed the CWC authorities about their issues and the necessary changes needed in the Central Waqf Act. Review of the role and contribution of Mutawallis in Waqf Management was also done.
