NAGROTA, Sept 11: Nagrota streets reverberated with joy and enthusiasm today with people, including old, young, women and children rejoicing the successful culmination of their stir over resumption of work on the Degree College, which had been stalled for any plausible reason.
The enthusiastic people, maintaining the COVID-19 protocol, congratulated the Nagrota Sangarash Samiti for taking the overwhelming mass movement to a logical conclusion with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha ordering the resumption of work on immediate basis during his interaction with a five-member delegation that called on him yesterday.
The Sangarash Samiti had been constituted by the prominent citizens to agitate their concern peacefully for invoking the attention of administration to the plight of young students.
Responding to the reach out of the Lt Governor, the agitating people called off their peaceful protests after a month and half, which witnessed prominent citizens of each Panchayat sitting on dharna on rotational basis. The protest entered a crucial stage when women plunged into the dharna braving monsoon rains and humid environs because the issue concerned the future of their children.
The youth in particular had become restive over dilly dallying on taking up the construction of the complex, foundation stone of which was laid last year by Commissioner/Secretary Higher Education Department in the presence of senior officers including District Development Commissioner Jammu and prominent citizens of the Nagrota Assembly Constituency.
The approval to the setting up of the degree college had been granted by the State Advisory Council last year with a view to make available higher education for the students at their door-steps. This was seen as a measure to provide a level play field to young students to compete with their counterparts in urban and semi urban areas. The decision had evoked tremendous response from the residents. However, the uncalled for delay had demoralised the stakeholders and forced the people to take to the streets.
Emotional scenes were witnessed with joyous youngsters garlanding their elders for their unprecedented support and resilience in pursuing the cause.
The residents also expressed their gratitude to the Lt Governor for listening to their vows, appreciating their concern for their children and passing on necessary instructions to the all concerned to ensure hassle free competition of the project.
