JAMMU, Dec 29: A Naib Sarpanch and a property dealer were charge-sheeted by the Economic Offences Wing of the Crime Branch of Jammu for their alleged involvement in a land fraud case.
Karanjeet Singh (property dealer) and Rajinder Singh (Naib Sarpanch), both residents of Suchetgarh, RS Pura, were charged with criminal conspiracy, cheating, and duping the complainant, Maqsood Ahmed of Drawtay, RS Pura, in a land deal.
A Crime Branch spokesperson said that Maqsood Ahmed claimed in his complaint that he purchased a 15-marla plot in RS Pura, Jammu, on December 25, 2020, from the accused Karanjeet Singh and Rajinder Singh. The transaction amounted to Rs 27 lakhs, with an advance payment of Rs 15 lakhs and subsequent payments of Rs 15 lakh through cheque and cash.
However, when Maqsood Ahmed sought the execution of the sale deed and refund of the balance payment, the Crime Branch spokesperson said that the accused refused. Allegedly, they even threatened him with harm to his family if he insisted on a refund. Cheques issued by the accused bounced due to insufficient funds, leaving the complainant deceived in the land deal.
Upon receiving the complaint, he said, the Crime Branch conducted a preliminary verification, which substantiated the allegations. A formal case was accordingly registered, leading to the arrest of accused individuals on December 6 and 7, 2023. The charge sheet, comprising evidence and statements, has been presented in court.
The accused face charges of cheating and duping Maqsood Ahmed of Rs 20 lakhs in the guise of selling a plot, now valued at over Rs 50 lakhs. The accused, uncooperative in the investigation, remain in custody as the legal proceedings unfold.
