JAMMU, Feb 1: Dogra Brahmin Pratinidhi Sabha (DBPS) here today paid rich tributes to the valiant Major Somnath Sharma, first Param Vir Chakra (PVC) awardee on his 98th birth anniversary.
Major Sharma embraced martyrdom at the young age of 43 years while fighting the enemy and effectively pushed back the Pakistani army attack under the garb of tribal invasion on November 3, 1947 at Srinagar Airport.
Ved Prakash Sharma, president DBPS paid floral tributes to Major Sharma.
Many speakers lauded the sacrifice of the great warrior. Tawi Andolan president, Chander Mohan Sharma and P.C Sharma stressed on the need to educate younger generation about the glorious history of warriors.
The Sabha unanimously resolved to appeal the Lieutenant Governor of J&K to name Srinagar airport after Major Somnath Sharma.
On this occasion JMC Mayor, Chander Mohan Gupta announced that JMC will pass a resolution for installing statue of Major Somnath Sharma at Bhagwati Nagar Chowk.
