Naqvi acquitted in case of violating election code of conduct

RAMPUR, May 16:  The district sessions court today acquitted Union Minister of State for Minority Welfare and Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi in the case of breaching the prohibitory orders during the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.
Shyam Lal, the counsel for Mr Naqvi, here said the Minister and his 19 supporters have been acquitted by District Session Judge P K Goyal in the case of violating the election code of conduct and blocking the road during 2009 Lok Sabha election.
The Union Minister and his 19 supporters were convicted and jailed for one year for breaching the prohibitory orders during the campaigning for 2009 Lok Sabha polls in January last by Civil Judge(senior division) Manish Kumar.
A monetary fine of Rs 4,000 was also imposed under sections 143 (rioting), 341 and 342 (wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code.
However, the court later granted bail after  briefly detaining  the Minister and others convicted on the sureties of Rs 15,000 each.  The case relates to an instance of disturbing the peace during 2009 Lok Sabha elections.  An FIR was registered against over 20 BJP supporters including Mr Naqvi in the Patwai police station on April 24, 2009.  Mr Naqvi has expressed his happiness and  termed the decision as truth prevails by saying “Satya Mev Jayate”.  He also said the matter was ‘politically motivated’.
