Narayan Sai arrested for rape

NEW DELHI, Dec 4:

Self-styled godman Asaram’s son Narayan Sai, on the run for the last 58 days after a 30-year- old woman slapped a rape case against him, was today arrested from the Delhi-Haryana border.
40-year-old Sai was produced along with two others before the duty magistrate in Rohini who gave 24-hour transit remand to Gujarat Police. He will be taken to Gujarat and produced before a magistrate tomorrow.
Police nabbed Sai, disguised as a Sikh with a red turban, after giving his SUV a hot chase near Kurukshetra.
“Two of his close aides, PSO Kaushal Thakur alias Hanuman (29) and driver Ramesh Malhotra (27) were also arrested with Sai from Pipli near Kurukshetra in the wee hours today,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) SBK Singh.
Police said it has seized Rs 2.61 lakh cash and 6 mobiles from Sai while Rs 13,500 were recovered from Hanuman. A Ford EcoSport bearing registration number of Uttar Pradesh was also seized. Some utensils were also recovered from the car, it said.
A reward of Rs 5 lakh had been announced for the arrest of Sai while Hanuman carried a reward of Rs 1 lakh as he too was named in the FIR.
Later in the day, when police took Sai to Rohini District Courts Complex and produced him before the magistrate, around 200 people, including Sai’s supporters and those who were protesting against him clashed.
The Surat police had registered two complaints filed by two sisters- one against Asaram and the other against Sai – of rape, sexual assault, illegal confinement and other charges.
The younger of the two sisters had accused Sai of repeated sexual assault between 2002 and 2005 when she was living at the Surat ashram.
The elder sister, in her complaint against Asaram, had accused him of repeated sexual assault between 1997 and 2006 during the time she was living at his ashram on the outskirts of Ahmedabad.
Asaram (72) is in judicial custody in Jodhpur jail after being arrested in September for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor. (PTI)
