JAMMU, May 14: Adding another milestone in the list of its achievements Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspecialty Hospital (SMVDNSH) has successfully conducted a very high risk orthopaedic surgery on a 104 years old patient.
Daropadi Devi aged about 104 years hailing from Jammu city, sustained fracture of hip region because of fall at home. Before arriving at SMVDNSH, she was taken to many hospitals of the city but could not get treatment in view of her advanced age. She sought consultation with Dr Vikas Padha, Consultant-Orthopaedic and Joint Replacement Surgeon of SMVDNSH who after getting her investigated thoroughly took up the challenge of managing her case despite very high risk involved in its management.
Day after her admission in the hospital, she was operated upon by orthopaedic team lead by Dr Vikas Padha himself. The orthopaedic team was assisted by Dr Rohit Sharma with the active support of Anaesthesia team lead by Dr Pankaj Gupta, Consultant- Cardiac Anaesthesia.
In the immediate post-operative period, she was managed by the team of Intensivists comprising of Dr Rohit Gupta and Dr Atul Sharma in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Because of hard work done on coordination by all these teams, the surgery and the post-operative period of the patient was uneventful.
Because of efforts put in by physiotherapy team comprising of Dr Pallavi Sharma, Dr Adhika Sharma, Dr Vikas Dhar and Dr Sandeep Pandita patient was made to stand on her feet the day after surgery following exercises of knee and hip. Patient could walk with the help of walker the very next day before getting discharged from the hospital.
According to Dr Vikas Padha, Smt Daropadi Devi was treated by Minimally Invasive Surgery using latest technique, technology and equipment’s available at hospital. This high-risk surgery was completed in about 30 minutes without any significant blood loss. There was no need of any blood transfusion after the surgery.
