Srinagar, Oct 28: Two days after tremors of major earthquake, with epicenter in Hindukush mountains, were felt in Kashmir, a family in Old City had narrow escape after their house collapsed partially last night.
Sajad Ahmad Khan, a resident of Mohalla Hathi Khan in Kathi Darwaza locality of Old City, said he and his family were sleeping when their house suffered major damage and developed cracks.
“We were sleeping and we had no idea what happened. In the morning when we woke up, we found that one side of our house has tilted and there are wide cracks on walls,” he said.
The earthquake, which rattled the entire region, left scores of houses and other structures partially damaged. However, many of these partially damaged houses’ pose grave danger to human lives as their foundations have weakened due to 2014 floods.
Khan demanded compensation for constructing new house as damaged house is unsafe. “At present, I live in my uncle’s house as I can’t take any risk. I appeal Government to provide compensation to me so that I can make my house fit for living,” he said.
The Monday’s quake left 3 people dead in the State while nearly two dozen persons sustained injuries. Several structures including bridges and buildings suffered damage and cracks.
