The arms were reversed and a two-minute silence was observed to honour the martyrs.
Aftab Malik, Chairman, District Development Council, Srinagar; Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar, Advisor to Lt Governor; R K Goyal, Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department; Dilbag Singh, DGP and senior officers of civil and police administration also paid tribute to the martyred policemen.
Meanwhile, Director General of Police (DGP), Dilbag Singh, today said that security forces have achieved major successes against the terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir and vowed to end its remnants.
Then DGP told media persons on the sidelines of the Police Commemoration Day at the Police Complex in Zewan here that the terrorism has been defeated to the extent that it is now on its deathbed. “We have also successfully safeguarded the lives of the people in J&K.”
The police chief mentioned that there were days when innocent people were killed on the orders of Pakistani agencies. “Those days are behind us now. People are now living in peace and prosperity,” he said.
“In the fight against the enemy over the past 30 years, we have lost 1605 personnel. The sacrifices made by our forces have led to our success in countering terrorism,” Singh said.
He said that the children, businessmen, and tourists are safe, and everyone is enjoying a peaceful environment.
The DGP said that Pakistan has initiated a new battle and the security forces are effectively working to combat it.
“The number of cases and arrests has risen, and the seizure of assets derived from this trade is ongoing. We are committed to addressing the narco trade and consumption vigorously. In recent years, 39 cases related to narco-terrorism have been reported,” he added.
Singh said that the investigations are being conducted differently, with some cases being handled by the NIA, some by the SIA, and some by the SIU.
He said that recently there was a major success in Ramban, where nearly 30 kilograms of cocaine was seized. “There were connections in Kupwara, Punjab, and now in Uttarakhand. The individuals involved have been apprehended. We will take strong measures against narco-terrorism.”
On two incidents of firing on the IB and LoC in Arnia and Kupwara, the DGP said that these incidents were “unique,” and they are currently investigating both cases.
“However, the ceasefire agreement remains in place overall. The security grid is robust, but these incidents were exceptional,” he added.
Singh said that many militant launch pads have been crushed to a large extent. “The activities happening there have been largely dealt with. But there are some camps along the border where such activities like training take place,” he said.
“Nonetheless, we have been able to effectively manage infiltration. There have been some attempts, but 90 percent of these cases have been dealt with right on the border. Those who managed to cross over have also been eliminated.”
He emphasized that the youth have come to understand terrorism as a conspiracy of the enemy, noting that last year, 110 local youth joined the ranks of terrorists, which has now reduced to 10 this year.
“Out of these 10, six have already been eliminated, and the others will meet the same fate. The youth need to comprehend and steer clear of such schemes. We do not want their lives to be wasted,” he concluded.
