National level 5-day training program for IFS officers begins at SMVDU

KATRA, Jan 24: Five day training program on ‘Disaster Management and Risk Reduction Initiatives through Forestry and Others’ for IFS Officers began at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, here today.
The training program is 8th in series, which has been organized by School of Business, SMVDU, exclusively for Indian Forest Service (IFS)Officers with funding from Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Government of India.
Dr Jyoti Sharma, the convener and the program coordinator, introduced the program and mentioned about the valuable interactions which will be the part of this training program. The present training programme aim to provide practical expertise and cases/examples of applied knowledge which will equip the officers with all relevant skills and tools needed in order to effectively respond to both natural and man-made disasters and resulting complex emergencies. The course utilizes existing strategies and tools, practical exercises, case studies, role plays and interactive multicultural discussion to explore the key issues faced when handling disaster situations.
The chief guest of the inaugural function was Simrandeep Singh, CEO, SMVD Shrine Board, who described the disaster risk reduction initiatives taken by the SMVD Shrine Board to combat the uncertainties and accidents by being responsive with trained people, infrastructure and technology.
The program participants are IFS officers from different cadres and states like Arunachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Uttarakhand.
Prof V K Bhat, Registrar, SMVDU, informed about the plans of conducting such programs and MDPs in future to bridge the gap between academia and expediency. Prof D Mukhopadhyay, Dean Faculty of Management and Head, School of Business also spoke on the occasion.
The five day program will include the sessions on hazards, risk and vulnerability assessment, knowledge management, disaster resilience and safer development, environment management and psycho-social care in disasters.
The resource persons for the event include Brigd K Chouhan, Rashmi Wazir, Commandant State Disaster Response Force, Jammu, DIG Amir Ali, Director Disaster Management and Deputy CEO, J&K State Disaster Management Authority; Vinay ACF, SMVDSB; Ravinder Koul, Trainer Disaster Management SMVDSB; Prof Sunil Dhar, Central University Jammu; Forest Officer Tiku, Dr Chander Mohan and others.
