JAMMU, Feb 28: National Science Day was celebrated by different organizations here today across Jammu and Kashmir to commemorate the discovery of Raman Effect by Indian Physicist, Sir C.V Raman in the year 1928.
CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (IIIM) Jammu hosted National Science Day celebrations with over 100 students from 20 schools. The event, under the theme “Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science & Innovation for Viksit Bharat,” included activities like lab visits, scientific model competitions, a quiz, and extempore contests. Winners included: APS Damana (1st prize in quiz), APS Jammu Cantt. (2nd prize) and APS Akhnoor (3rd prize). In the model competition, BVM High School Hiranagar won first, followed by Happy Model Higher Secondary and Springdales English School. Bavleen Kour (APS Jammu Cantt.) won the extempore competition. Dignitaries present were Dr. Zabeer Ahmed, Director, CSIR-IIIM, Dr. Asha Chaubey, Senior Principal Scientist and Er Abdul Rahim (Head RMBD & IST Division).
The Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh Geo-Spatial Directorate, Survey of India, celebrated National Science Day 2025 at their office premises on Golf Course Road, Nagrota. The event showcased various maps and modern surveying instruments like drones, GPS and Total Stations. Students and visitors learned about map-making using UAV/Drone technology under the SVAMITVA scheme. A quiz contest for schoolchildren on geography and science was also organized, with prizes awarded to the winners.
The Dhanvantri Library at the University of Jammu organized a Book Exhibition to mark National Science Day, focusing on Science for Skill, Innovation and Incubation. The exhibition, inaugurated by Prof. Alka Sharma, Director of SIIEDC, aimed to foster scientific learning and research. The event featured interactive sessions with Dr. Jatinder Manhas and Dr. Sandeep Arya and showcased a range of books on scientific advancements.
The Science Club of Government College for Women, Parade Ground, Jammu, celebrated National Science Day with an invited lecture by Pooja Rasgotra, Deputy Secretary, JKSSB, on the theme “Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science and Technology for Viksit Bharat.” The event also featured a competitive seminar with students from various streams presenting on the theme. Prof. Anjali Abrol, Convener, welcomed the guests, and Principal of the college emphasized the importance of science. The seminar was judged by Dr. Ritu Magotra and Pooja Rasgotra, with winners awarded trophies.
On National Science Day, Institution’s Innovation Cell (IIC) and the Department of Sciences at Govt. College of Education, Canal Road, Jammu, organized a Symposium and Quiz Competition under the theme “Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science and Innovation for Viksit Bharat.” The event was graced by Principal, Dr. Jyoti Parihar, who emphasized the importance of science and innovation. Prof. Sunanda Rani, Head of the Department of Physical Science and Convener of IIC, delivered the keynote address. The event was conducted with the support of Dr. Shubhra Jamwal, Prof. Priyanka Mahajan and Prof. Chanchal Singh Manhas.
SAM Government Degree College Budgam celebrated National Science Day. The hybrid-mode event featured a special address by Prof. Dinesh Kumar, former Vice Chancellor of J.C. Bose University and current Vice Chancellor of Gurugram University.
Principal Dr. Mohd Amin Malik elaborated on the Raman Effect and Raman Spectroscopy’s applications, stressing the importance of nurturing scientific temper among youth. Faculty members Dr. Ruksana Jabeen (Head, Chemistry) and students Owais Malik (Chemistry) and Taufeeq Ahmad (Physics) delivered insightful presentations, followed by a Q&A session.
SPPND GDC Samba and GLDM GDC Hiranagar jointly organized a two-day event to celebrate National Science Day, commemorating Dr. C.V. Raman’s discovery of the Raman Effect. The event featured seminars, science model demonstrations and a poster-making contest.
The event was attended by dignitaries including Prof. (Dr.) Twinkle Suri, Principal of GDC Samba; Prof. (Dr.) Pragya Khanna, Principal of GDC Hiranagar; Kewal Krishan, CEO Samba; Dr. Pankaj Bandhoria, Convenor of the Innovation & Incubation Cell, GDC Samba; and judges were Dr. Poonam Kamotra, Dr. Ramkrishan, Prof. Rashi Gupta and Prof. Mala Bhasin.
Government Degree College (GDC) Bishnah celebrated Science Day 2025 with a series of engaging activities aimed at promoting scientific curiosity. The event featured a documentary screening, an interactive session, and a lively Q&A segment. It was coordinated by Dr. Ratika Sharma (HOD, Physics), Prof. Sonia Khajuria (Assistant Professor, Chemistry), Dr. Ashma Gupta (Assistant Professor, Zoology) and Dr. Kiran Koushal (HOD, Urdu), under the guidance of Dr. Shallu Samyal, Principal of GDC Bishnah. The event inspired students to explore science and its real-world applications.
The Science Club of Government Degree College RS Pura, under the aegis of IQAC, organized a workshop to celebrate National Science Day. The event, centered around the theme “Medicinal Plants and Biodiversity Conservation,” featured interactive sessions and hands-on activities. Dr. Wahid -ul-Hassan, Technical Officer at JK Medicinal Plants Board, was the chief guest, while Dr. Muzaffar Ahmed Khichloo, a wildlife ecology expert, delivered an insightful talk. Prof. (Dr.) Preetpal Kour, Principal, inaugurated the event, emphasizing science’s role in everyday life.
Government Degree College Kunjwani, Sainik Colony inaugurated a week-long celebration for National Science Day under the guidance of Prof. (Dr.) Manisha Sarup Kohli, Principal. The event began with the lighting of the lamp, followed by an address from Prof. Kohli, who highlighted the contributions of C.V. Raman and the role of modern science in sustainability. The first day featured a quiz competition on “Science in 2025: Innovations for a Sustainable Future.” Team C won first place, followed by Team A in second and Team B in third. Prof. Shamshad Bibi, Prof. Bushra Nizami, and Prof. Shafquat Ahmed judged the quiz, coordinated by Dr. Rohini Jamwal. An exposure visit to CSIR-IIM Jammu was also organized, supervised by Dr. Bhawana Sharma, to enhance students’ scientific knowledge and experience. The event was organized by Dr. Arti Pandoh Gupta, Convener, IQAC & Science Innovation Club.
Students of Government Degree College Nagrota visited an exhibition organized by the Jammu, Kashmir & Ladakh Geo-Spatial Directorate, Survey of India, on National Science Day. The exhibition showcased the process of map-making using advanced technology, including drones, GPS and CORS. Students gained valuable exposure to digital maps and modern mapping instruments. Prof. Anjali Mahajan, Principal of GDC Nagrota, addressed the students and interacted with them about their experience. The faculty members accompanying the students included Dr. Ritu Diwan, Prof. Parveen Singh, Prof. Ashiq Hussain Parray and Dr. Sunil Kumar.
