National Seminar on ‘New Vistas in Plant & Microbial Sciences’ concludes at JU

JAMMU, Mar 13: With a plea to reinvent Botany, the two-day UGC-SAP sponsored National Seminar on “New Vistas in Plant and Microbial Sciences” concluded here in the Department of Botany, University of Jammu (JU).
In the valedictory function, Dr Poonam Dhawan, Dean Academic Affairs, JU, was the chief guest while Prof AK Koul, Dean Academic Affairs, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, Rajouri was the guest of honour.
Addressing the galaxy of research scientists and scholars, Prof Dhawan said that success of this research sharing academic event can be gauged from the quality of research presentations made during these two days. She hoped that such interactions would keep the scientific momentum going especially among the young researchers and scholars.
Prof AK Koul, in his address exhorted that synergistic approach between basic and advanced molecular research in plant and microbial sciences is need of the hour. “Plants and microbes have sustained human kind through ages and they hold promise to do so in future as well”, he added.
Prof Geeta Sumbali, Co-ordinator UGC- SAP, presented the detailed report of the diverse research presentations made by the participating delegates covering frontier areas of plant and microbial sciences.
Prof K Murugesan, from the CAS in Botany, University of Madras, Chennai and Member of the UGC-SAP Advisory Committee, presented his work bio-efficacy of Bioactive Compounds from ‘Anjani’ plant against human cancer cell lines.
Earlier, Head of the Department and organizing secretary of the Seminar, Prof Yash Pal Sharma, extended a warm welcome to the guests and the participating delegates. Prof Namrata Sharma and Dr Veenu Kaul, Co-organizing secretaries, presented the vote of thanks and co-ordinated the proceedings, respectively.
Among other invitees of the seminar were Prof Zafar Reshi (Srinagar), Prof NS Atri and Prof MIS Saggoo (Patiala), Dr Sanjeeva Nayaka (Lucknow), Prof Rajesh Tandon and Rupam Kapoor (New Delhi), Prof DK Saxena (Bareilly), Dr Bikarma Singh (IIIM, Jammu) and Dr Rakesh Bhargava (Bikaner).
