National seminar on ‘Innovative Trends in Plant and Microbial Sciences’ concludes

JAMMU, Mar 3: Two-day national seminar on “Innovative Trends in Plant and Microbial Sciences” organized by the Department of Botany, University of Jammu, concluded here today.
The valedictory function was held in the seminar hall of the Department of Botany.
Prof A K Koul, Dean, Academic Affairs, BGSB University, Rajouri was the chief guest while Prof Manoj Dhar, Registrar of the University of Jammu was the guest of honour on the occasion.
Delivering a thought proving lecture address, Prof A K Koul expressed his idea of innovation and its relevance in the modern day research and underlined the rapidity with which genomics have revolutionized science. He exhorted upon the young researchers to ignite their ideas for fruitful research
Prof Manoj Dhar, talked at length about the historical relevance of microbial and plant sciences and opined that although much strides have been made in the field of Biotechnology, the relevance of basic sciences including cytogenetics still holds good.
Earlier, several interesting invited lectures were delivered by eminent speakers in the morning and the afternoon sessions. Dr. P L Uniyal, from Delhi University talked on the ‘Research need and modeling for mapping of ecosystem dynamics’. Explaining the significance of Molecular markers for solving identification conflicts in taxonomy, Dr. Susheel Verma stressed upon the application of these molecular tools in substantiating morphological studies. A very relevant and inspiring lecture on ‘Advances and further scope in lichenological research in India was delivered by Dr. Sanjeeva Nayaka from NBRI, Lucknow . Prof A S Soodan from Amritsar gave a lecture on “A practical approach to resolve the mystery of botanical names”.
Prof. Yash Pal Sharma, Head of the Department and Organizing secretary of the seminar, presented a brief report of the proceedings and the recommendations which emerged out of the deliberations.
Prof. Geeta Sumbali, Convenor of the Seminar presented the formal vote of thanks.
Proceedings of the technical sessions were handled by Uzma Hamal under the guidance of Prof Namrata Sharma, Dr. Veenu Koul, Dr. Geeta Sharma and Dr. Harish Chander Dutt
Others who were present on the occasion, include Prof. Shashi Kant, Prof R N Gohil, Prof VK Anand, Prof AK Wakhlu, Prof. Anima Langer, Prof M C Sharma, participating delegates, faculty members, research scholars and students.
