JAMMU, Mar 11: Two day UGC- SAP sponsored national seminar on “New Vistas in Plant and Microbial Sciences” got under way today here in the Department of Botany, University of Jammu. On the occasion, Prof Javed Musarrat, Vice-Chancellor, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, Rajouri was the chief guest while Prof R D Sharma, Vice Chancellor, JU, presided over the function and Prof K Murugesan from CAS in Botany, University of Madras, Chennai, was the guest of honour in the inaugural function.
In his keynote address, Prof Musarrat said that the Universities in Jammu and Kashmir should endeavour to go in for collaborative research in the emerging area of basic and advanced sciences including nanotechnology and hoped that there would more frequent faculty development programmes and adjunct faculty exchange.
In his presidential remarks, Prof R D Sharma expressed his satisfaction on the organization of the UGC-SAP Seminar by the department. “The research output and teaching of this Department of Botany is of international standard and the students and research scholars are among the best of Human Resource in the University”, he opined.
Prof K Murugesan said that very few institutions, including the Department of Botany, is a centre of basic botany in the country.
Prof Geeta Sumbali, Co-ordinator UGC- SAP, presented the detailed report of the progress and achievement made under SAP project of UGC.
Earlier, Prof Yash Pal Sharma, Head of the Botany Department and organizing secretary of the Seminar, extended a warm welcome to the guests and the participating delegates. Prof Namrata Sharma, Co-organizing secretary, presented the formal vote of thanks while the proceedings of the seminar were conducted by Dr Veenu Kaul.
Around 160 Delegates, including eminent teachers, scientists and researchers from different institutions across the country are participating in this event.
