JAMMU, July 10: Natraj Natya Kunj Cultural Society Jammu today inaugurated workshop on Natya Shastra. It is a Sanskrit Hindi text on the performing Arts. The text is attributed to sage Bharta Muni and its first complete compilation is dated to between 200 BCE and 200 CE, but estimates vary between 500 BCE and 500 CE.
This workshop will cover the basics of Natya Shastra which includes the training of the major and minor limbs of the body as explained in Bharata’s Natya Shastra. National Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee Theatre Director of Jammu Abhishek Bharti who is also a Research Scholar in Department of Indian Theatre, Punjab University Chandigarh will conduct the workshop.
Talking to the media he said “The Theatre theory normally taught in institutions are slokas from Abhinaya Darpana, which is a text based on Natya Shastra but it differs from Natya Shastra in some aspects. Therefore knowledge about the practical aspects of Natya Shastra and its relevance in various performing arts is hard to come by, as everyone knows; Bharatha’s Natya Shastra is the main root of all the art forms.
All these queries found a proper answer in this workshop. President of The group Kumar A ‘Bharti’ said that this workshop will cover all the eleven elements of Natya Shastra described by Bharata Muni. The subjects will include dramatic composition, structure of a play and the construction of a stage to host it, genres of acting, body movements, make up and costumes, role and goals of an art director, the musical scales, musical instruments and the integration of music with art performance.
Speaking on the occasion Dr Rajinder Thappa, Advisor Natraj Natya Kunj Jammu, said that this workshop will not only give the wave of freshness in every stage of understanding ‘Natya Shastra’; but also become the platform for Jammu Students to understand this 2000 years old text and guidelines in handing over such knowledge to the future generation.
