Natraj Natya Kunj’s play ‘Last Colony’: Artistic take on crime against women

JAMMU, Mar 7: A theatrical treat for its contemporary theme, form and treatment, Natraj Natya Kunj’s performance of Hindustani play ‘Last Colony’, heralded a spring time for Jammu theatre scene, at the auditorium of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, here today.
Taking practice of theatre to a higher level, the young production team of director, actors and technical support persons, while showing grasp of new language of theatre also announced their commitment as agents of social change by taking a stand against all kinds of systemic exploitations, be it of women or children.
Compiled by A K Bharti, and directed by Abhishek Bharti, today’s experimental play which was more like a collage, focused on critical situations of women and their struggle for honorable and equitable life in the society which treats them as lesser gender and pounces and preys upon them.
The script used combination of prose and poetry that showcased true events day in and day out splashed by global media, as if with a glee. The parade of women related crimes such as domestic violence, rape, molestations, mutilation of body parts, apathy of state administration, law and order, policing system presented through artistically choreographed movements, stylized stances and dance postures, left an indelible mark on the audience.
The play, alluding to umpteen examples of crime against women including in their own homes, not only unmasked the monster that lurks behind the façade of civilized man, but emerged as a collective voice of women against patriarchy.
The chorus of actors with their synchronized movements charged the dramatic action. The suitable background music and light design gave a fillip to the visually appealing presentation.
The cast on stage included Aaditya Bharti, Manik Sharma, Kannav Sharma, Amandeep Sharma, Lalit Sharma, Vishal Bhat, Karan Mehra, Vishal Pandita, Safir Saba, Surbhi Gupta, Neha Bhat, Subhangi Dhamir, Dipshi Mahajan and Niharika Sakshi.
The next play-of the ongoing drama festival being organized by J&K Academy of Art, Culture and languages-Rajneesh Gupta’s Adalat Mein Gandhi by Yamini Cultural Society, will be staged on Tuesday, March 8, 2015.
