Interestingly, ‘Twelfth Night’ is in the college curriculum and to have witnessed it live on stage was sheer delight for students who were cheered for their favourite actors.
‘Twelfth Night’ narrates the story of a young girl Viola, who is separated from her twin brother Sebastian, following a ship wreck. The comedy hinges on mistaken identity and role reversal. It is believed that the play was first performed in 1961 before Elizabeth I, even before it was published in 1623, seven years after Shakespeare’s demise.
Vice Chancellor Cluster Universities Dr Anju Bhasin was the chief guest on the occasion. In her address, Dr Bhasin said that cultural activities of similar nature should be held in colleges more often. She said that a series of Shakespeare plays should be staged across colleges in Jammu to better help understand the works of the renowned English writer.
While, speaking about the Trust’s initiative to showcase Twelfth Night before the college students, Poonam Singh Jamwal, founder, Kunwar Viyogi Memorial Trust said, “Art and Culture need to be promoted and the best way of doing so is by engaging the youth in such endeavors. The response that Twelfth Night received today is proof enough that the youth wants to be a part of this cultural revolution and we can achieve this only through art innovation.”
