JAMMU, Feb 19: Theatre group ‘Natrang’ here today staged Hindi play ‘Girgit’ directed by Neeraj Kant. Based on a Russian short story by Anton Chekhov the play proved hard hit satire on present socio-political system and was deeply rooted in the soil of Jammu.
The play ‘Girgit’ revolves around a dog and corrupt police officer.
The stage action starts when a dog bites a pickpocket who approaches a police officer for help to roundup owner of the dog but all went in vain.
A passerby hints that the dog belongs to the local Minister as he saw a similar dog moving around his bungalow.
On getting his clue, the officer starts beating the pickpocket for teasing a respectable dog. The officer claims that a dog of minister cannot bite unless forced to do so.
As he was beating the pickpocket, another man observes that the Minister cannot keep such dog, as he is known to have pointer-hunting dogs only.
On this, the dog is thrashed and search continues for the owner so that the pickpocket may claim compensation.
The beating of dog continues until a servant of the Minister appears who with little refusal identifies the dog as the Minister’s brother’s who came from Delhi. Here the dog is escorted back home with protocol.
Artists who acted in the play were Brijesh Avtar Sharma, Sushant Singh Charak, Neeraj Kant, Vishal Sharma, Aadesh Dhar, Kushal Bhat, Amit Brahmi and Sumit Bandaral.
