Natrang stages Sanskrit play ‘Mrichkatika’

JAMMU, Feb 17: An act from the famous Sanskrit play ‘Mrichkatika’ written by Sudraka, an ancient playwright and directed by Sumeet Sharma was staged here today at Natrang Studio in its Sunday Theatre Series.
It was a unique experience for the audience to watch before them the actors putting all the emotions and expressions and speaking dialogues in the most revered Language of Indian Culture, Sanskrit.
The play has been recently featured by Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, Shri Ranbir Parisar at National Theatre Festival of Sanskrit plays from all over India, ‘Vasant-utsava’ at New Delhi where it got the award of Best Actor and received tremendous appreciation. Experts of Sanskrit Language Prof M. Chandrashekhar, Principal and Dr Satish Kapoor praised Sumeet’s successful effort of directing the play in Sanskrit in a highly professional manner.
In the play, Charudatta is a generous man who has maintained his reputation in Ujjayini as an honest and upright man with a rare gift of wisdom, he is enamored by Vasantasena, a courtesan of great wealth and reputation. But ‘Shakar’, King’s Brother-in-Law likes her and so despises Charudatta in his frustration as she snubs him.
One day, just by mistake of change of Cart, Vasantasena happens to arrive at the Royal Park of Shakar, where first he tries to entice her with his words but after being humiliated, In the fit of anger, he tries to kill her. Thinking her to be dead, he hides her body and accuses Charudatta of the crime. Though he proclaims his innocence, but his presence in the park along with his son’s possession of Vasantasena’s jewels implicate the poverty-stricken man, and he is found guilty and condemned to death by King Palaka. Just as Charudatta faces execution, Vasantasena appears and the excited crowd intervenes in time to save him from execution.
The students of  Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan who mesmerized the audience with their wonderful acting included Purshottam Das, Chetna Kumari, Ankita Chakraborty, Gowardhan Kumar, Sunil Kumar, Anil Kumar, Arvind Kumar and Jagdish Kumar. Live Music was singing were done by Santosh Kumari, Mangla Thakur, Pawan Kumar Prashar, Madhur Sharma & Amit Kesar Sharma. Anil Tickoo Designed and operated the Lights.
