JAMMU, Dec 24: Theatre group ‘Natrang’ here today staged a new Urdu play ‘Ghunghat’ based on the story of Ismat Chughtai and directed by Neeraj Kant.
The narrator while presenting the story praises the beauty of 80 year old Gori Bibi and tells that no man had ever touched this virgin.
He further tells that when the golden-haired blonde was 13 years old, her mother and father were worried that someone might take away their daughter because she possessed extraordinary beauty.
The 13 year old girl gets engaged to a black man and during the engagement everyone teases Kale Miyan saying if he touches the bride, she will become dirty.
Beauty of the bride has such an effect on Kale Miyan that he refuses to marry her. Everyone explains a lot and finally the groom agrees and the marriage gets solemnised. But hearing the mention of black and white people in wedding songs, Kale Miyan gets so irritated that during the wedding night, they asks the bride to lift her veil and when she refuses, he leaves her and goes to Jodhpur.
Gori Bibi’s parents get worried. After seven years, when Kale Miyan’s grandmother falls ill, he comes home and once again an attempt is made to mix Gori Bibi and Kale Miyan. But Kale Miyan again asks the bride to lift the veil and on her refusal, he runs away from the house.
For years the fair lady keeps waiting for the black man. When Kale Miyan grows old, he returns home for the last time and an attempt is made to reunite 80 year old Ghori Bibi with him. But before Gori Bibi can lift her veil, Kale Mian dies and the play ends.
