Navy buying 56 choppers

NEW DELHI, Aug 10 :
The Indian Navy has finally initiated the process for procuring 56 light utility helicopters to replace its ageing fleet of Chetak and Cheetah choppers.
The navy issued the Request for Proposal to all the top helicopter makers of the world and the deal is expected to be to the tune of 800 million US dollars, sources in the Navy told reporters.
The Navy has asked the perspective vendor that the twin engine, 4.5 tonne choppers should have the capacity to operate in all kinds of hostile conditions as these machines are expected to be deployed in anti-piracy operations also.
The IAF and the Army are also in the process of buying 197 utility choppers, which is nearing completion.
Earlier Navy chief admiral Nirmal Verma has, in his last press conference indicated that the global tender for light utility choppers is likely to be floated soon.  (UNI)
