JAMMU, June 21: National Conference believes in supremacy of the people and is committed to empower Panchayati Raj institutions, said Ajay Sadhotra, senior National Conference leader and Member Legislative Council while addressing a public meeting after laying foundation stone of Panchayat Ghar of Sum Panchayat costing Rs 20 lakhs.
Sadhotra said that Omar Abdullah had promised the people of the State during 2008 elections that if NC voted to power shall hold Panchayat elections and strengthen Panchayati Raj institutions and our leader has fulfilled his promise by empowering them to interfere in fourteen departments for the betterment of people.
The MLC said that successful Panchayat elections have frustrated PDP and BJP and both are busy in spreading wrong propaganda that Panchayati Raj institutions have not been empowered. These parties are enemies of basic democratic bodies i.e. Panchayati Raj institutions and do not want to see a strong Panchayati Raj System to which Coalition Government headed by Omar Abdullah is committed to strengthen.
He further said that the basic idea of Panchayati Raj institutions is to involve more and more people in the speedy developmental process of the State. J&K Panchayati Raj Act, 1989 is the best in the country. Panchayati Raj institution’s experts, who are working on it have also appreciated the Act, he asserted.
