DODA, May 20: Provincial President Devender Singh Rana on Monday said that National Conference does not believe in raising its political edifice over the miseries of the people and decried the attempts of politicising the situation arising in the wake of earthquake in the Chenab Valley.
“We have not come here to bake our political bread but we want to share your miseries, help out those in distress and do whatever is possible for your rehabilitation”, Mr Rana told impromptu public meetings at Arnora, Bhandote, Badron, Dhara and Bhagwah areas of the tremor affected Doda district.
Currently on the third leg of his fortnight extensive visit to the area, Mr Rana and his team of National Conference leaders met the victims individually and in groups to have feel of their sufferings and seek first hand feedback on the measures taken by the administration in providing assistance.
The Provincial President referred to the initiatives taken by the Government in solving the problems of earthquake victims and said that the administration has been asked to ensure all possible assistance to the sufferers in fair and impartial manner so that nobody nurtures impression that justice has not been done to him.
He said the Governmental agencies have been asked to ensure transparency by notifying the quantum of damages to the dwelling units and the extent of relief proposed by the Government so that aggrieved people can lodge their observations about the genuineness of claims with the concerned authorities.
He reiterated his party’s commitment to reach out to the victims and help them get rehabilitated irrespective of their political affiliations and said that as the nature’s wrath has been a human problem, it needs to be tackled with extra care and compassion. He said the National Conference workers have been asked to reach out everyone even in the remotest areas and ensure how they can be helped.
“We want Leh type package under which the damaged houses had been provided assistance between Rs 2 and 2.50 lakh”, he said, adding that till this materialises, the Chief Minister has released Rs 25 crore to the district administrations besides sanctioning of three months free rations.
About tents, the Provincial President said that collective efforts are being made to have these in place in adequate numbers for meeting the exigencies. In this regard, he referred to the efforts of the Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and the humanitarian gesture of Jammu and Kashmir Bank in making available one thousand tents.
Speaking on the occasion, District President National Conference and MLC Khalid Najeeb Suharwardhy called for emergent measures in improving the civic conditions in the affecting areas, equipping the health institutions with necessary staff and medicines besides ensuring fair distribution of relief to the sufferers.
