RAMGARH (SAMBA) Oct 14: Patron of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today said that the present regime headed by National Conference has brazenly eroded sanctity of all democratic institutions in the State. He regretted that deceit tactics of the Government to undermine such institutions has badly shattered people’s faith in the democracy.
Addressing an impressive public meeting at Ramgarh town of Vijaypur Assembly segment, he took the State Government to task for indulging in dirty gimmicks to dishonor people’s mandate. He especially mentioned that more than 80 percent voters had cast their votes in the Panchayat elections to repose their faith in democracy but the Government has failed to strengthen Panchayati Raj institutions in the State and failure of the Government to delegate powers to Panchayats has shattered people’s faith.
While pointing towards decision of the Government to conduct Block Development Councils (BDCs) elections, he raised doubt over intension of the coalition regime. “On the one hand the Government has announced elections for the BDCs while on the other hand coalition partner has decided to amend the existing Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Raj Act in the State in the next Assembly session,” he observed.
He said that Government has systematically eroded all democratic institutions in the State and did not spare even the highest institution of the Governor.
“In the Governor’s Address during the budget session of the Assembly, the State Government had promised to conduct Urban Local Bodies (ULB) elections in the month of April this year”, he recalled and added that by delaying the ULB elections the Government has disrespect the institution of Governor and reflected its dictatorial mindset.
“What to say of strengthening democratic institutions at grass root level, NC has never allowed even democracy to be flourished in the state”, he said and said that this party (NC) want to control all democratic institutions through undemocratic means by indulging into deceit tactics and this nefarious design of ruling party would be proved disastrous for the State.
He, however, asserted that gone are the days when NC had hegemony on the political scenario of Jammu and Kashmir. “PDP has emerged as biggest political force in the State and the party would strongly oppose gimmick of the ruling NC to undermine democratic institutions and to control these institutions through deceit tactics”, he said and added that PDP would agitate for strengthening democratic institutions in the State”.
Pointing towards rampant corruption in the State, PDP patron said that common masses were bearing brunt of the wrong policies of coalition regime. He said that besides corruption, unprecedented hike in the prices of essential commodities has further compounded woes of the people. He opposed decision of the Government to put a cap on subsidized LPG cylinder.
Highlighting achievements of previous PDP-Congress regime in the State, he said that PDP’s model of growth and development was best suited for the all regions and sub-regions of Jammu and Kashmir. He said model of development propagated during PDP-Congress rule had given encouraging results.
PDP patron also supported demand of the residents that Ramgarh should be given tehsil status.
