MARH, Sept 2: Senior National Conference leader and former Minister Ajay Kumar Sadhotra today called for unity among weaker sections to attain political empowerment and economic emancipation, saying their upliftment is imperative for harmonious growth of the society.
“National Conference has all along strived for larger role of weaker sections in the decision making at the grass roots level”, Mr Sadhotra said at a function held to honour Vijay Lochan on his nomination as Co-Chairperson of the party’s SC Cell, at Marh.
Mr Sadhotra exhorted the weaker sections to make their voice felt and collectively work for socio-economic transformation and national reconstruction of the State and the country. He, however, cautioned against the machinations of vested interests for dividing society on the basis of region, religion and caste, saying this is not a good omen for healthy and vibrant democratic polity.
The people have to work in unison and isolate the divisive forces, as their growth was detrimental for the State, which has a unique ethos of togetherness and amity. “We will not allow the larger society to be fragmented by vested interests for political objectives”, the former minister maintained.
Mr Sadhotra referred to the contribution of Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah and Madr-e-Mehrban in empowering weaker sections during most testing times and said freeing the poor and downtrodden from shackles of ignorance was biggest challenge. “Due to concerted efforts of the NC leadership, weaker sections have emerged as a vibrant force, who are playing dominant role in every sphere of activity”, he said, adding that this legacy is being carried forward by Dr Farooq Abdullah and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
