JAMMU, July 4: National Conference state secretary and former MLC Rattan Lal Gupta today expressed concern over unabated and unprecedented hike in fuel prices, saying this has now almost become a routine to effect the increase.
“Instead of any relief, the consumers are getting a daily shocker in terms of hike in fuel prices, especially as the trend in the international crude oil markets is quite reverse”, Gupta said in a statement issued here today.
He said these insensitive measures won’t only impact the mobility of commuters but also result in increased transportation charges of essential commodities, which will eventually burden every segment of the society especially the middle and poor class segment of population, who are already grappling with the grim situation in the wake of coronavirus.
Gupta said the farm sector will also get a big jolt due to alarming increase in diesel prices. In the absence of labour force, the farmers are solely dependent on mechanised farming and an increase in the fuel prices will prove detrimental to this sector. He questioned the sagacity of the Centre in allowing the oil companies to go ahead with price hike even as their prices in the international market are on sharp decline.
The State secretary said unregulated increase in petrol and diesel prices is injustice and it appears that the Government has no commitment to the people. He sought an immediate roll back in the policy, saying that frequent rise could have a negative impact on the overall economy, which is already in bad shape.
