NCTC may be revived soon

NEW DELHI: The NCTC, an anti-terror hub proposed during the previous UPA regime, may be revived soon with the Narendra Modi Government mulling to prepare an “attractive” proposal which might be acceptable to states.

A senior Government official said the initial move to set up the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) by former Home Minister P Chidambaram soon after the Mumbai terror attack in 2008 received stiff opposition from the states which thought it would impinge the federal structure of the country.

“We have to prepare an attractive proposal which is acceptable to states. We will also have to club intelligence gathering, investigation and operations together,” the official said.

Those who opposed the earlier proposal included Prime Minister Modi himself, who was then the chief minister of Gujarat.

Besides, in the revived proposal the Government is likely to keep NCTC under direct control of the Ministry of Home Affairs and not under Intelligence Bureau, the official said. (AGENCIES)
