NCW Chairperson calls on LG, discusses women related issues

LEH, June 13: Chairperson, National Commission for Women (NCW), Rekha Sharma, today called on Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retired), at Raj Niwas.
Commissioner Secretary, Department of Social Welfare, Padma Angmo; Deputy Commissioner Leh, Shrikant Suse; Deputy Secretary NCW, Dr Shivani Day and Special Coordinator NCW, Neha Mahajan were also present in the meeting.
Neha Mahajan apprised the LG of the meeting chaired by her in Leh to review the implementation of all centrally sponsored schemes related to the protection and empowerment of women in border areas such as Ladakh. She informed about her plan to visit Kargil to review the implementation of the various central schemes in the district. She also informed about the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to implement these centrally sponsored schemes for the empowerment of women, especially in the border areas of India.
She also informed the LG about the establishment of Violence Free Homes- A Women’s Right (Special Cell for Women), an NCW-Tata Institute of Social Service (TISS) project, one each in Leh and Kargil, where counselling is provided to victims of domestic violence. The LG was also informed about the issue faced by the victims of domestic violence in accessing these facilities in border areas, particularly due to the large distance.
Commissioner Secretary Social Welfare informed about necessary steps being taken to make the women’s helpline number functional at the earliest for the benefit of women, particularly those residing in border areas. She also informed about the need to provide capacity-building training to officials on the POSH (Prevention of Sexual Harassment) Act 2013 to ensure a safe working environment for women.
The LG emphasized the need to involve PRI representatives in women-related issues in villages and make them accountable and responsible as it is their social responsibility. He highlighted the need to make them realize their social responsibilities to serve the public so that justice could be served to the right. He also highlighted the issue raised by the Union Minister Giriraj Singh to take necessary steps to improve the livelihood opportunities of women living in remote villages of Ladakh.
Mishra instructed Padma Angmo to look for funds under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to introduce induction stoves at all the Anganwadi Centres in Ladakh. He also instructed DC Leh to open new LPG Gas Agencies in areas such as Nyoma, Nubra, Zanskar and Kargil for the benefit of the public.
