NDMA takes charges of relief measures for Manipur quake, rescue teams airlifted

NEW DELHI :  National Disaster Management Authority has taken charge of the situation at Manipur and has dispatched two NDRF teams by air to Imphal for rescue operation after a high intensity quake hit the North Eastern state early this morning.
“Two NDRF teams are being air lifted from Guwahati to Imphal. Communication systems are functioning, particularly BSNL.
There is continuous communication with the state government. NDMA is monitoring and coordinating all relief activities. National Crisis Management Committee headed by the Cabinet Secretary is meeting at 1030 hrs today to assess the situation and provide all necessary help from the Government of India,” a Home Ministry statement said.
NDMA spoke to the control room and relief commissioners of all the states in the North-East: Manipur, Assam, Tripura, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Nagaland and the State of West Bengal.
NDMA is working in close coordination and guidance of the Prime Minister?s Office (PMO). So far, five deaths and 33 injured have been reported from Imphal.
Damages to a few buildings, residential units and Government offices have been reported, including damage to a six-storey building in Imphal.
An earthquake of 6.7 magnitude occurred in district Tamenglong, Manipur at 0435 hrs.  (UNI)
