NEC for Higher Educational Institutions

India has one of the most diverse educational system in the world, every State/UT with its own State Board, too many local languages incorporated in local education system, some states having totally Hindi medium education system as such least common platform among themselves. National Education Policy (NEP) introduced in 2020 was purely aimed to plug these drawbacks, improve the standards, decrease the burden on children with holistic learning and fragmented tests schedule with now focus on daily routine class work also instead of judging student performance merely on annual examination, a multi-tier assessment system well in place to assure constant evaluation of students. But there is no mechanism in place to judge the performance of educational institutions especially Higher Education Institutions which are very important for career progression of students. It’s a fact that simple graduation under Delhi University is much more valuable than many other universities graduation so much so that cut off list of some streams in some colleges is 100 percent marks. Keeping in view of all this and as envisioned in NEP, high-level panel to strengthen the assessment and accreditation of higher educational institutions has been formed for preparing a road map for the National Accreditation Council (NEC). Just like University Accreditation system NAAC in place, all higher education systems will be accredited, their strong points and shortcomings evaluated, thereby giving them an opportunity to improve in future and providing actual picture of institution to students to judge for himself where to take admission. Government can incentivize the rankings and also provide valuable feedback to underperforming institutions.
The whole process is a win- win situation for all- Government getting all the relevant data from institutions to plan future course corrections, students getting most valuable ranking system before admissions and institutions getting a chance to get themselves evaluated and thereby removing shortcomings. The intentions are clear, under NEP make India’s education system as robust as possible, one of the best in world in future.
