Effective Road Transport System of a country is too vital to her development.With each passing day,the government is undertaking measures to expand road network and upgrade the existing roads in the country.With the launch of schemes such as PMGSY new roads have been constructed in rural areas providing road connectivity to remote and inaccessible areas.The number of vehicles is also increasing thanks to the purchase power of the citizens and easy loans offered by banks and other financial institutions.In fact,the growth rate in the number of vehicles has been much faster than that of population since independence. This rapid motorisation has resulted in a number of problems such as congestion,frequent traffic jams, road accidents.
Thus,there is need to provide efficient Non- Motorised Transport Networks to control air pollution and save fuel.Car centric cities need to be converted into people friendly cities.There ought to be separate cycle tracks and wide footpaths in big cities to promote the habit of cycling and walking .The pedestrians and those using non motorised transport ought to have the same rights as those using motorised vehicles.Efforts should also be made to promote ecofriendly vehicles powered by renewable sources of energy such as sun, wind, electricity, biofuels etc.
The use of e-rickshaws should also be promoted in big cities.People too need to change their habits and avoid using bikes or cars while going for shopping at short distances.They ought to realise that they can buy milk,bread or curd in the morning while on a morning walk rather than using bikes or cars. Recently, the Chief Minister of Delhi took out a cycle rally to stress the need for using bicycles instead of cars and other vehicles.Such events must be launched by other State Governments too.Non Public Transport is the major cause of air pollution in cities. Therefore,Intelligent Transport Services aimed at improving safety and security environment through CCTVs in vehicles and provision of helpline,website,social media facility,mobile charging etc.should also be introduced in buses to promote efficient Public Transport Service to reduce dependence on the Non Public Transport in order to reduce emission of poisonous and greenhouse gases.
