Need to go back to paper ballots till there is VVPAT in EVMs: Congress

NEW DELHI: Condemning the remarks made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday that the issue of the alleged malfunctioning of the EVMs raised by Opposition was ‘fabricated’, the Congress, referring to the Supreme Court decision on use of EVMs with VVPAT, today called for reverting to the system of paper ballots  till there was VVPAT in EVMs.

Addressing reporters here, AICC spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, ”At Bhubaneswar, the PM said  there are many fabricated issues, one among them being the EVM issue. However, on October 8, 2013, the Supreme Court gave a 15-page judgment on the issue where it  said that the use of paper trails with EVMs is necessary for restoring confidence of the people in the EVMs.

The Apex court said that  “From material placed with both sides, we are satisfied that paper trail is an indispensable requirement of free & fair elections.  (AGENCIES)
