Sir,
This has reference to the writeup’Let Private Players step in’ (DE, May 18, 2019) published on the occasion of International Museum Day.There is no doubt that our state has inherited a rich wealth of cultural heritage -both tangible and intangible in the form of manuscripts, sculptures, forts, palaces, folklores, folkdances and other things having great archaelogical and historical importance. What is required is to conserve and preserve this priceless heritage and transmit it to the posterity with the same responsibility for them to carry it further. It is in this context that museums play a significant role in preserving this rare wealth including artefacts, manuscripts, sculptures etc and display this rich wealth to the art lovers, archaelogists and public at large to sensitise the people about the need of protecting and preserving this valuable heritage that our wise kings, writers, artists and ancestors have bequeathed to us.Museums help in collecting objects and materials of cultural, religious and historical importance and preserve them, research into them and present them to the public. They are thus, repositories and the guardians of the humanity’s treasures for future generations. But it is sad that sufficient care is not taken of this hertiage. We often read reports of many forts, palaces and other items of heritage either having been crumbled or are on the verge of getting destroyed due to the vagaries of weather and time and apathy of the concerned Departments.
The writer has beautifully highlighted the role of museums to give first hand information to the students about the times of yore and thus, motivate them to appreciate and promote our rich culture and heritage.Similarly, establishment of more museums will definitely help in attracting more and more tourists to our state and thus, boost the economy.A visit to a museum invariably inspires students, especially of history, archaelogy, anthropology, museologyetc to study the times during which particular manuscript was written, sculpture came into existence and helps them to have a glimpse of the life and times of the people of that age. Some of them may be inspired to go in for advanced research in archaelogy and other related fields and may bring laurels to our state by discovering and unearthing more such items of cultural heritage. Thus, there is a dire need to establish museums all over the state and encourage the people to establish the museums of their own.The Government ought to give financial help to those who intend to establish museums in order to preserve the items of our cultural heritage to prevent them from being destroyed.
