Need to develop indigenious medical products :Kalam

HYDERABAD, Mar 29:  Former President AP Abdul Kalam today said there was a need to develop indigenious medical products  at affordable prices in the country.

Addressing the oncologists, scientists and medical students after inaugurating the 4-day Global Oncology Submmit-2013 organised by Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute (BIACHRI) here, Dr.Kalam said that 60 per cent of the cancer patients were being treated by non-oncologists in the country.

There were 1200 qualified oncologists for 1.2 billion population in the country, the former President said adding there was also need for psycolgist in the cancer institute to  give counciling to the patients.

Nano technology has to be adopted in treating cancer patients as there were no side effects, he said adding most  of the hospitals had no psycologist in the country.

Prof D D Patel from Gujarat Cancer Institutte in Ahmedabad, said a National Cancer Institute is coming up on 50 acres of land at Delhi at an estimated cost of Rs 1000 crores.

A National Conference on cancer will be held in Delhi by November this year and specialists in the field of cancer across the globe are expected to participate in the event, he said.

There are 29 regional cancer centres in the country and  rural cancer registery has to be taken up awareness on cancer  in rural and semi-urban areas, he added.

Earlier, Mr Patel was felicitated by Dr Kalam with a citation in recognition of services in the field of surgical oncology.

BIACHRI Chairman and Actor N Balakrishna expressed hope that  deliberations at this forum will help in finding new ways to help reduce the suffering of cancer patients. (UNI)
