Nehru inducted in UGC Expert Committee on skill development

JAMMU, Dec 14: Under the new education policy (NEP-2020), the University Grants Commission (UGC) has constituted an Expert Committee to promote short term skill development courses.
Vice-Chancellor of Shri Vishwakarma Skill University, Raj Nehru -a son of the soil has been given the responsibility in this six-member committee in making guidelines for short term skill development course. Raj Nehru is the founder Vice-Chancellor of the country’s first Government Skill University which is doing remarkable work in the field of skill. These short term courses will be of three to six months duration. These courses will be as per the National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF). All the courses will be based on state-of-the-art technology and will contribute in a big way in bridging the gap between traditional education and vocational education. The guideline of these courses will be for all the higher educational institutions (HEI) of the country.
Raj Nehru said that the guideline of these courses will be prepared in such a way that the students doing the course can meet the needs of the industry in the coming times. He informed that through these short term skill courses, skilled human resources will be created in the country on a large scale. This will not only provide employment to the youth but also provide skilled workers and professionals to the industrial system of the country. Vice-Chancellor said that one of the objectives of these short term skill development courses is to make the youth self-reliant. After these courses, youth can also become entrepreneurs by being skilled.
Nehru said that this vision of the University Grants Commission will make skill education more prosperous in the country while welcoming the initiative of Professor M.Jagadish Kumar, Chairman, UGC. VC informed that the committee will soon start working on preparing a guideline for short term skill development course.
He said Shri Vishwakarma Skill University is running more than two dozen courses ranging from 3 to 12 months. From agriculture to information technology, engineering and management, these courses are currently running at Palwal, Haryana.
