KATHMANDU, May 16 : Nepal’s Army teams on mission to collect waste on mountains had recovered two dead bodies, including one on the world’s tallest Mount Qomolangma, the national force said on Thursday.
The other body was found on the fourth highest Mount Lhotse (8,516 meters), and body skeletons were also found during the cleaning campaigns, the army said in a statement, noting the two bodies and skeletons had been handed over to the forensic lab of the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu.
In addition, the teams had already collected 8,620kg of waste left by climbers on the mountains, the statement said. Starting on April 11, the Nepal Army sent three teams to pick up waste on the 8,848.86-meter-high Mount Qomolangma, Mount Lhotse and Mount Nuptse (7,861 meters) under the support of Nepali Sherpa climbers. The Nepal Army had planned to collect 10 tons of waste and bring back five dead bodies from the peaks.
The Nepal Army started to collect waste on different mountains in 2019, but suspended the cleaning mission in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. (UNI)
