Never dreamt for PM’s post: Omar

JAMMU, Sep 16: Asserting his political agenda is not focused on obtaining the chair but to serve the people of the State, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today said, he has never dreamt for the post of Prime Minister.

“I have never dreamt for the post of Prime Minister. If I serve the people of the State in the best possible way, it will be the biggest thing for me,” Omar said here.

Omar, who was replying to a question of a student at a function here regarding his role if he becomes the country’s Prime Minister, said “there are several people in the queue.”

“First of all people of J&K has given me a chance to serve them and my endeavour will be to serve them in the best possible way,” he said.

Referring to J&K as a special State, he said, “nobody is seeking answers about the happenings from any other state – it is being asked what is the situation in J&K – whether the State is peaceful or not”.

My endeavour is to serve people and steer the State towards peace, prosperity and development, he said, adding that some politicians may have political aim of obtaining power, “but my politics revolve around public service”.

Nothing is permanent and people replace others like in sports, he said.

The Chief Minister said, all politicians are not with motivated interests, but aim to serve people.

“Like in other fields of life, there may be some bad politicians in politics, but majority of them are good people committed to serving people and nation,” he said and asked students not to shun the desire of entering politics after completing their studies by getting disappointed with the performance and actions of some politicians.

Describing the country’s future to students, the Chief Minister told them to nurture themselves into best possible human resource and to lead the state and country as capable, qualified and astute leaders.

“All of us have to leave the field for younger generation. Politics is no different game. Politicians also have to make way for young people to come in and hold the stage,” he said and expressed hope that younger generations would be better managers of affairs in future.

The Chief Minister said respecting each other, spreading love and affection and making public service benchmark in all sphere of life, makes a person an ideal citizen.

“We may not resemble each other in colour, creed and caste. Our religion, ideology, region, language and culture may be different. But we can live together in an atmosphere of amity and brotherhood and prosper jointly,” he said and added that India is a diverse country, and an ideal citizen would respect his fellow citizens and extend help without considering anything.

Omar said, society and democracy stand on four important pillars of legislature, judiciary, executive and media, and all are equally responsible to build a principle-based society where justice, rule of law and inclusive development are guiding principle for all.

In reply to another question about grant of State cadre for youths of J&K qualifying for civil services, he said it is not possible to grant it to every IAS and IPS qualifier, as it is the country’s prime service and J&K is part of the Country.

Omar said his Government has created many opportunities for youths to take up self employment ventures and be members of the Micro Small and Medium Entreprises (MSME) sector.

“Investors from outside have not shown an encouraging trend to venture in the State. However, we have created good opportunities for our educated, skilled and trained youths to generate employment and economic activities not only for themselves but others,” he said and mentioned unique employment generation and skill upgradation programmes of Himayat and Udaan launched in the State to create jobs.

Many states are craving for such initiatives implemented by the Centre in J&K, he said and asked the youth to take advantage of those initiatives and prove their mettle.

Replying to another question, Omar said, consolidation in education and health departments have already begun in the State and higher education institutions have been asked to offer subjects of high market orientation and modern requirement to students.

With the passage of time, newly opened colleges would provide almost all modern subjects to students, he added. (AGENCIES)
