JAMMU, Oct 24: New Chief Executive Councilor (CEC) for Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Leh will have to be elected within the next 15 days after the Government nominates four Councilors to the LAHDC.
Deputy Commissioner, Leh, Prasanna Ramaswamy told the Excelsior that as per Constitutional provisions of the LAHDC Leh, the new CEC will have to be in place within 15 days of declaration of the results. However, prior to that, the Government has to nominate four Councilors as they too have the voting right to elect the new CEC.
“Only when the new Councilors are nominated the Deputy Commissioner Leh, who serves as the Secretary to the Council, will convene first session of the LAHDC Leh and preside over it to elect the new CEC,” official sources said.
The new CEC will be elected by the simple majority i.e. in the House of 30 (26 elected members plus four nominated), the party with 16 members will get the new CEC. However, BJP has already won 18 seats and would have advantage of four nominated Councilors, who will also vote for it.
BJP leaders said they would finalize name of the new CEC after few days. BJP Incharge Jammu and Kashmir Avinash Rai Khanna was likely to visit Leh shortly to finalize name of the CEC. The BJP was likely to invite party general secretary Ram Madhav for the election but his visit hasn’t been confirmed so far.
In the results declared yesterday, BJP had won 18 seats, two third majority followed by Congress 5, NC 2 and Independent 1.
