RAJOURI, Jan 14: While a new born baby (girl) allegedly died of negligence of the hospital staff in district hospital Rajouri this morning, the Director Health Services Jammu has ordered an inquiry into the matter.
The woman Rekha Devi, was brought to Rajouri hospital by her husband Ashok Singh, resident of Rehan village, at around 9 am after the lady complained of labour pains. The woman was examined in the hospital by the Gynecologist at around 10.15 am. She was asked to wait in the hospital for some time and then operated upon by Dr Neeru at around 8 pm in the evening.
According to Ashok Singh, as per doctor the baby was healthy and alright. She even told them that baby was fine and then left. The attendants (other staff) in the hospital did not care properly resulting into the ultimate death of the child. Ashok Singh said at around 11 pm the child developed some problem and he went to the ward nurse and asked to see the baby as she was crying differently. She came and just touched the body of the baby and said nothing has happened and don’t be panic.
He said they found that baby was unwell and again during mid night approached the nurse and asked to inform doctor on duty as condition was not good. Then she started abusing and saying that child was alright and let her sleep. He said again third time at around 4.30 am he found that baby was serious. Other people in the ward also got worried and approached staff, again no doctor was available. A staff member and the same nurse put the baby on ventilator but removed hardly after half an hour and left. Ultimately, they declared at around 8.20 am that the baby was no more. He alleged that operation was successful and delivery was also fine but due to the negligence of support staff and non-availability of doctor on night duty the baby died. He demanded action against the people responsible for it.
Medical Superintendent of the hospital Dr Chaman Lal when contacted said that he was not there in Rajouri today but denied the allegations of negligence. When asked that about half a dozen babies died in this hospital due to negligence in just last two weeks, he again denied the same.
Meanwhile, Director Health Services Jammu Dr Madhu Khullar said that she had ordered inquiry into the whole matter. She said Deputy Director (Health) Headquarters, Dr Baldev is the chairman of the Committee while CMO Rajouri, Paediatrician from Sunderbani hospital and Senior most Gynaecologist from DH Rajouri are the members. They will submit report within 72 hours. Dr Khullar said action will certainly be taken, if negligence found on the part of any staff member including doctor of the hospital.
