AKHNOOR, July 5: A young and newly married house-wife committed self-immolation at her residence at Naraina village in Khour block today.
A police spokesman said that 24-year-old Surekha Devi, wife of Pawan Singh, resident of Naraina village under Khour police jurisdiction after some tiff with the husband other members of in-laws’ family went into the room in fit of anger poured kerosene oil and set herself on fire.
The family members rushed and tried to douse the flames and later rushed her to Akhnoor hospital where she was declared dead. The police came to know about the matter and registered case in this connection. It said the statement of the deceased woman could not be recorded. The body after postmortem at Sub-District hospital Akhnoor was handed over to the family for last rites.
The police said that woman had been married hardly two months back. While the parents alleged that she was being harassed for dowry, some members of in-laws family side alleged that both husband and wife used to quarrel in petty issues. The police has started investigation into the case.
