Nexus between officers, politicians has turned NREGA into disappointment: CPI (M)

SRINAGAR, July 3: Dismayed over the inordinate delay in the execution of MGNREGA works this fiscal and nonpayment of wages to job card holders, thousands of CPI (M) activists took to streets demanding fair and transparent implementation of NREGA in Kulgam district.
Coming down heavily on the Government for poor implementation of MGNREGA, the District Committee Kulgam CPI (M) regretted that group preferences exhibited by some officers in nexus with their ‘political bosses’ has led to an elite capture of the flagship programme. It said the programme is aimed at providing livelihood security to the poor, who are not able to get their assured wages due to mismanagement and prevalent corrupt practices in Rural Development Department particularly in district Kulgam.
In a statement issued here today, the District Committee CPI (M) Kulgam alleged that NREGA programme has been hijacked by the contractors that have led to irregularities of unforeseen sorts.
Stating that corruption has been institutionalized so much so that it has started gaining legitimacy with opportunist officials enjoying patronage to the detriment of the poor and under privileged the demonstrators asked the Government to wake up to the demand of bringing total transparency in NREGA, lest it said people will be forced to wage massive movement to secure justice for themselves.
Earlier while addressing the demonstrators senior leaders of CPI(M) Abdul Hamid Wani, Mohd Afzal Parray, Mohd Amin Dar and Ghulam Rasool urged upon the Government to bring those involved in corruption at different levels of the administration to book and punish them under law.
