JAMMU, July 12: The Non-Gazetted Police Pensioners Welfare Forum (NGPPWF) has expressed deep concern over the recent incidents of “police brutality” toward innocent individuals, which have been highlighted by the social media platforms.
Highlighting one such incident, the Forum said, a few days ago, SHO City Poonch, allegedly subjected an accredited police cop to severe physical abuse, including the use of electric shocks, despite the absence of any case against him.
The Forum said this incident was widely condemned by the society and received coverage in both print and electronic media.
The Forum members said that in similar instances involving one Sanjit Kumar and his family members, Mohammad Rashid and his family members, as well as Mohammad Sher, the victims continue to suffer from the effects of electric shocks reportedly given to them in the same police station.
“These human rights violations tarnish the reputation of the accredited J&K police, which had received 109 out of the 344 awards presented to paramilitary forces in 2022,” they said.
They highlighted another incident of a similar nature reported at Chatha Police Post, where an innocent young boy working in a turban shop/house was allegedly picked up and mercilessly beaten while in police custody, without proper verification of the case.
Subsequently, the Forum members said, the boy was found to be entirely innocent and was released.
“This incident also gained widespread attention on social media, further damaging the reputation of the police,” they said.
The Non-Gazetted Police Pensioners Welfare Forum insisted that the responsible police officials in Chatha case be held accountable for their actions.
The forum has urged the Police Chief to thoroughly investigate these incidents and take strict action against those responsible.
