JAMMU, Jan 6: Non-Gazetted Police Pensioners Welfare Forum (NGPPWF), under the chairmanship of Ajit Singh, today staged a demonstration here, voicing its concern over pay anomalies and discrimination with the retired personnel.
Several pressing issues were brought to the forefront during the protest.
Ajit Singh highlighted the disparity in the implementation of Government order number 229-F of 2014, addressing pay anomalies. He emphasized that the order’s effect should have been retrospective, commencing from 1996 when the 5th Pay Commission was initially implemented throughout the state. Singh pointed out the struggles faced by surviving pensioners and lamented the lack of benefits for those who have already passed away.
He drew attention to the disparity between benefits provided to defence personnel, who receive healthcare policies post-retirement, and the neglect of such provisions for police personnel.
The Forum, under Ajit Singh’s leadership, had previously submitted a representation seeking financial assistance for retirees facing distress or chronic illnesses, resulting in beneficial outcomes.
Acknowledging the Forum’s efforts, Singh mentioned the introduction of a guard of honour during the last rites of deceased retirees, as well as initiatives like ambulance services in remote areas and an NGO mess for police retirees in Jammu.
However, the primary issue at hand remains the pay anomaly. Singh called for unity among retirees to press for the resolution of this pressing concern, expressing hope that the government would address the pay discrepancies promptly.
Singh proposed a recruitment strategy similar to other Union Territories, advocating for initial recruitment in Armed Police and subsequent transfers to other wings after ten years to avoid discrimination in promotions.
He further demanded equitable promotions for District Police and Armed Police, questioning the disparity when the DGP oversees both wings.
Singh concluded by advocating for ration allowances for Special Police Officers (SPOs).
