NGT issues notices on Dal lake condition

JAMMU, May 12: Taking serious note of deteriorating condition of Dal lake in Kashmir due to municipal sewage, pollution and urbanization and its impact on the lives of Hanji people (those living in houseboats), National Green Tribunal (NGT) has impleaded J&K Lake Conservation and Management Authority, Central Pollution Control Board, Jammu & Kashmir Pollution Control Committee and Deputy Commissioner Srinagar as respondents and issued them notices for filing response.
In the news-item whose cognizance has been taken by the NGT in exercise of the power conferred by the Supreme Court, it has been mentioned that lake is choking by the surge of plastic and pollution and there is discharge of municipal sewage”.

“The sewage has destroyed the fish and at one time people used to drink the lake water but today it cannot be even used for washing the face. It also contains the opinion that smart city project launched in 2019 as well as influx of tourism which choked their spaces – the sewage has been polluting Dal for a long time”, the report said.
It has also been mentioned that the present condition of the Dal lake is the result of the complex mesh of activities happening throughout the past few decades, as the surge of residents and tourists has grown exponentially. The destruction of the fish has impacted the business and life of Hanji people.
