Srinagar Dec 24: Traffic police asked the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to erect crash barriers at accident-prone sites on the Tangmarg-Gulmarg road to lessen the severity of accidents after a video of a vehicle sliding into the gorge went viral on social media.
A vehicle carrying three tourists and a local driver skidded off the road near the Hilltop Crossing on the Tangmarg Gulamrg road, injuring at least three tourists and a local driver.
“Crash barriers should be installed by NHIDCL, and work should be resumed where it is needed. At the moment, private cars have been spotted driving directly to Gulmarg, which can be fatal. We must encourage local drivers to transport tourists from Tangmarg because they are experienced in driving in snow with chains on their tyres, especially when there is sleet or frost”, according to an official document.
The department also requests that the GDA install suitable parking signs at Tangamrg in order to effectively manage traffic in the region. “Proper parking signage boards, as well as GDA staff, should be made available,” the official document states. It added that a proper trauma facility with 24/7 advanced life support should be established in Gulmarg.
