Srinagar, Dec 1: While the authorities failed in getting a ‘Pontoon’ required for the cleaning of the Gilsar Lake, the Nigeen Lake Conservation Organization (NLCO) has finally managed to get one on its own which is stated to speed up the overall process.
Due to the absence of a ‘Pontoon’, the cleaning process of the lake was not witnessing any headway due to the lack of necessary machinery; however, the same now seems to be changing.
The NLCO has been able to get the Pontoon on a personal basis which now has been shifted to the Gilsar Lake for effective cleaning especially the deep dredging of the Lake which is said to be the key to the revival of the dying water body in the heart of Srinagar.
It is to be noted here that the NLCO with the support of the authorities has been carrying out the cleaning of the water bodies in Srinagar and started the campaign from cleaning the Khushal Sar which has now been brought back to the glory with its traditional waterway restored. Gilsar Lake is adjacent to Khushal Sar where the process of rejuvenation is currently on.
Manzoor Ahmad Wangnoo who is heading NLCO said the Pontoon is going to be the key to the effective cleaning of the Gilsar Lake, and that they are hoping to see the change soon.
“Earlier, we were able to do the cleaning on the surface only, but for the effective one, we needed a Pontoon which we were so far not able to get and today, we are happy that we finally have the machine which will push our cleanliness campaign further with an active support from the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir,” he said.
Pertinent to mention here that the Irrigation & Flood Control Department has been so far trying to get the ‘Pantoon’ for the cleaning of the Gilsar Lake, however, the same did not materialize which prompted the NLCO to make efforts to get the Pontoon on their own.
“We have been doing our bit for the last sometime now, and now that we have managed to get the Platoon for the Lake, the ball is in the court of the concerned department to carry out the necessary dredging using the machine,” NLCO Chairman said.
Concerning the functioning of the machine, it will remain under the control of the NLCO while the Irrigation & Flood Control Department will operate the same for the cleaning of Gilsar Lake.
Pertinent to mention here that the efforts of Manzoor Ahmad Wangnoo were lauded by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha who asked the people to ensure the water bodies are kept clean and efforts are made on the individual level.
