Srinagar, June 13: In an effort to safeguard the well-being and safety of medical students, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has introduced a dedicated module on its website to facilitate the lodging of complaints related to ragging. However, the NMC has expressed concern over the inadequate response from colleges in addressing these complaints promptly.
To address this issue, the NMC has issued a strong directive to all medical colleges, emphasizing the need for prompt attention to forwarded complaints and the submission of compliance reports without delay. The directive is in line with the implementation of the Prevention and Prohibition of Ragging in Medical Colleges and Institutions Regulations, 2021.
Under these regulations, it is mandatory for all medical colleges and institutions to submit an annual “Compliance Report.” Surprisingly, NMC said “despite the regulations being in place for over a year and a half, many colleges have failed to comply with this requirement.”
To rectify this, the NMC has instructed all medical colleges to promptly comply with the Prevention and Prohibition of Ragging in Medical Colleges and Institutions Regulations, 2021. Colleges have also been urged to submit the Compliance Report in the prescribed format to the NMC by June 30, 2023.
The report, NMC said, should include all complaints received after the admissions of the 2021 and 2022 batches, covering the period up to March 31, 2023. It has also expressed iits concern over the lack of response from colleges regarding student complaints and non-compliance with the regulations.
The NMC has stated that failure to adhere to these directives will be viewed seriously, and appropriate actions will be taken against non-compliant colleges.
The primary objective of these measures, apex body said, is to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment for medical students. Effective handling of complaints is crucial in achieving this goal.
