SRINAGAR, Aug 22: Chairman JK People’s Democratic Front (JKPDF ) and former minister Hakeem Mohd Yaseen has said that clarification given by the Government about inclusion of non- state subjects in the voter lists for proposed assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir was not enough to allay apprehensions of the people on the issue.
In a statement issued here today Hakeem Yaseen said that the Government statement about enrolment of about 25 lakh new electorates, including those residing ordinarily in the JK Union Territory , in the voter lists for the proposed Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir has caused widespread unrest and apprehensions among the people.
He said clarification given by the Government in this regard was not convincing enough to allay apprehensions among the people. He said Government should start a sustained, vigorous and comprehensive awareness campaign at the block, tehsil and district levels on war footing basis to allay apprehensions among the people that ‘ non-domiciles would not be enlisted in the electoral rolls in no way.
Yaseen said J&K is a politically and strategically sensitive state where internal peace and tranquility is must to defeat nefarious designs of the enemies. He said the controversial statement on inclusion of non- state subjects in the voter lists has brewed mistrust and unrest among the people here.
PDF chairman said that the people were religiously sensitive and emotional about their special identity and would in no way tolerate any attempt to fiddle with demography of their motherland. Both Center and JK Union Territory Governments, in order uphold sanctity of the electoral democracy, should immediately remove all apprehensions and mistrust caused by the press conference of the Electoral officer, he added.
